For almost two decades I’ve been working for you. The County Attorney’s Office handles all kinds of civil and criminal matters. We prosecute violent offenders and protect victims. We reduce incarceration for minor marijuana offenses, and hold corporations accountable for worker safety.
Since 2022, I have been honored to serve as your County Attorney. It’s a responsibility I take very seriously because it requires integrity and the courage to make tough and sometimes unpopular decisions. While I am a lifelong Democrat, my office works tirelessly to protect every member of our community, regardless of their faith, race, gender, income, or political party.
I am running for re-election because Johnson County isn’t just where I work, it’s my home. I grew up on a farm in Solon until we moved to Iowa City when I was in fifth grade. Like me, my kids went to Iowa City public schools. I was on the PTO, carpooled to soccer games, and cheered for the Hawks. Over the years, my family has experienced the power of community in times of celebration and sadness.
As County Attorney, I spearheaded the Community Violence Intervention Program to help prevent crime in the community before it happens. I have developed programs to reform juvenile justice and keep our children in the classroom. My team developed a victim-centered approach to domestic violence prosecution and prevention, and we made our office more accessible to people in need of support services.
This is a challenging time. Politicians want us to focus on our differences instead of our strengths. You can trust me to serve the people of Johnson County fairly and respectfully. I’m Rachel Zimmermann Smith and I’m asking for your vote.
