A record of progressive leadership...

In preparing to run for another term as Johnson County Attorney, I thought a lot about the past three years.  When I asked for your vote in 2022, my goals were informed by fifteen years of experience as an assistant county attorney. I'm proud to report my office has improved our community support by:

• Helping Johnson County citizens understand the role of the County Attorney’s office and its service as the county’s specialized criminal and civil law firm. We hired a Public Safety and Justice Public Information Officer ("PIO") who uses our website and social media to provide updates to the community about what our office is working on.

• Becoming more victim-focused by making our office more accessible and less intimidating for people who need our services. We formed a victim safety checklist for service providers and law enforcement to use in the field.

• Working with a team of service providers, law enforcement, and community members to address and prevent gun violence in our community. Visit the County Attorney's website to learn more about the Community Violence Intervention program.

• Creating and expanding the marijuana diversion program to encourage rehabilitation and effective treatment.

Justice for Victims

Shortly after I took office, the Johnson County Attorney’s office began a complex three year international quest for justice in the 2022 attempted murder of an Iowa City business woman by a University of Iowa student.

Civil cases also protect the public

Our office discovered that a county contractor did not have required workman’s comp insurance. We also deal with nonviolent crimes like with the same concern for victims.

Preventing domestic violence and gun violence

While I was assistant county attorney, I helped introduce the ODARA program (Ontario Domestic Abuse Risk Assessment) a research based tool for law enforcement to use in assessing risk during domestic violence calls. The program is in use county wide. We have also implemented a successful gun violence program. I have continued to focus on prevention and encouraged voters to make sure that their elected officials understand and support law enforcement efforts.
